The Importance of Placemaking and Placekeeping

Placemaking, now more appropiately called, Placekeeping, is the urban artform of bringing life back to a space, especially through way of community input. It’s about turning a previously neglected space into a multi-functional space that the community actually wants to visit and use. As third spaces have become less prevalent in our society due to a myriad of factors, it is important to protect and maintain the precious public spaces we do have.

Good Placekeeping practice typically involves gathering feedback from local stakeholders such as nearby residents, surrounding small businesses, local government and even local non-profits. Important questions include:

“How do you envision the community using this space?”

”Is there any history involved in this space that we should try to honor?”

“Who are the relevant stakeholders who may use this space?”

“What funding opportunities are available to achieve our vision for this space?”

”How can we make this space accessible to all people?”
